A short summary (Music to bring a Veteran Home Safe)
Four years ago, in this cave-like room, Tom played the first Doors album for him. Steve was totally in love with the music and he told that he was a kind of hooked in the music, Jim Morrison was making.
The history is about two brothers, Steve and Tom.
Tom is Steve’s big brother. Tom turned 18 the last week in July. He was enlisted to the Marine and already in February he got stationed to Vietnam. He survived that tour and for the next year and a half he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, five hundred miles away from his home. He came home only three times and he never spoke of the war. On his last visit, he brought Steve a tape recorder.
Tom was sending back to Vietnam and Steve was wondering that they could make him going back to Vietnam twice.
There was no point to get out of it. Last tour, I counted down the days till I'd be back in the World. I get here, nothing is like I remembered. Everywhere I go, I find hippies and protesters talking crap. Where do I fit in? You make me some tapes, maybe I'll find a clue how to live here again.” He said.
So Tom wants Steve to send him some tapes with Jim Morrison’s music so he could find a clue to live in this World again.
Popular music in the US during the 70’s, was mainly different forms of pop. Often characterized as shallow. It began with singers like Carole King and Carly Simon topping the charts, while New York went through a period hearing hip-hop, punk rock and even salsa was starting to kick in New York. By the middle of the decade, many different trends were vying for success. At the time had progressive-rock bands like Kansas and Journey had at stable long running popularity. Bruce Springsteen earned a lot of critical acclaim through the decade, finally breaking through in the late 70’s. Disco, especially The Bee Gees, was topping the charts the last few years while punk rock was developing underground.
A lot of babies were born in the mid 40’s which made the 60’s a very young nation. All those young people started rebelling, against the materialism of their youth. Many of them joined therefore the peace force or fighting for civil rights. Almost no person in the 60’s was affected of it. There were many Americans who were either enlisted or drafted into the war. 2.6 million Americans participated in the Vietnam War and where 50.000 of them would die. However, those young American who didn’t join the war, filled out the streets for massive anti-war demonstrations, such as the one that took place in 1967 where over a 100.000 protesters gathered at the Lincoln Memorial. Protests against the political and authoritarian that supported the war, soon turned violent.
